This was a freelance project for a advertising agency in Hawaii. I was asked to do some logos for Ward Center's "Sidewalk Sundays" new monthly event. The directive was to create something fun, lively, and that contained movement as the audience is the local and eclectic. The logo below is what Ward Center decided on. This logo was used on print ads, signage, and on their website.

ET/AL was a former magazine collaboration between Gary Saito and Matthew Honda. Images show examples of what would have been spreads for these particular stories in the magazine. The magazine was never completed in design past these two stories before the project was disbanded. Click here to view our promo booklet.

Although the project has disbanded, I chose to put this in my portfolio because it shows examples of logo development, typography and layout design.

Spread I: Images are from a video that was shot by Gary Saito. I laid out the typography.

Flyer design for Santa Ana based producer Free the Robots (Chris Alfaro) performance in Honolulu. This event was organized by Space&#38;Sound and myself. Space&#38;Sound is a new, independently funded art/music collective that is striving to bring our favorite noteworthy music and art to Hawaii.

Featured in Honolulu Weekly.

This event was also the first one where we worked at producing mini films on the event. Below are videos done in collaboration with my film expert genius friend, Brad Caberto.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10784/1413358/japanaidheader_700.jpg" border="0" width="684" height="136" width_o="684" height_o="136" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10784/1413358/japanaidheader_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
My side project I work on with my friends is called Space&#38;Sound. We are a collective that strives to showcase our favorite art and music culture in Hawaii. My role in Space&#38;Sound is to handle all design and art direction.

In collaboration with Lightsleepers, we were able to put together a benefit concert for the people in Japan. 100% of the proceeds were donated to The Salvation Army of Japan. The benefit concert featured an amazing line up of local musicians of every genre. The event was a huge success, raising over $1000 in donations.

Designing fliers and shirts for this event was difficult and emotional for me. I wanted to show the emotion and magnitude of what had happened without being too obvious, offensive or too ornate. The flier is simple, with the Japan flag being distressed. Subtle cracks run through it. The raw edges were intended to convey both debris and also reminded me of the spray of ocean water. For the event, Space&#38;Sound printed a very small run of shirts to sell as well as 9 posters printed on rice paper. Each poster is hand cut and numbered. Currently almost all shirts are gone and all prints have been sold.

Thank you to everyone for supporting this event.

		<description>&#60;img src= "http://annienguyen.net/header/header_vines.jpg"&#62;
I designed this at the age of 17. The reason why I chose to put it in my portfolio is because it was the first "big" web page I ever did. I was a huge fan of Australian rock band, The Vines at the time. All I wanted to do was make art and listen to rock and roll. (As most teenagers would probably.) I recall sitting in class, doodling away the very beginnings of this layout only to go home and work on this vector for days. This website was also my first attempts at Flash.

I've stopped working on this website years ago, but while it was active, it put me in contact with a lot of people. I was in touch with the band's manager/the band, Ivy League Records, and NME through this fan site. Though I've lost interest in working on these types of websites, this is still one of my favorite works.

		<description>&#60;img src= "http://annienguyen.net/header/header_ritz.jpg"&#62;
This was another fan page I did out of my love for Arctic Monkeys. I was 19 and totally in love with their demo tapes. I wanted to design a page that captured as much of the band and their music as possible. The crumpled stop motion paper is actually a map of Sheffield, England, where the Arctic Monkeys are from. The first Flash frame features Hunter's Bar, a place mentioned in the song "Fake Tales of San Francisco." In the backdrop are scribbled lyrics from "From the Ritz to the Rubble" and on every page is a vectored image of each band member.

I stopped updating this page ages ago out of lack of time and interest but it was fairly exciting while it was active. This website put me in touch with Much Music Canada, MTV Europe, NME Magazine, Domino Records, many Arctic fans a like and according to the interviewer at Much Music, the band has seen this site as well. To this day, this page is one of my favorites just because I remember being so excited and happy to have designed it.

This is a gallery of all my screenprints I did in class. They were done with various requirements. Fresh (geometric) was made using handcut rubylith. Self-portrait was done as an alter ego assignment. Fresh! Alice in Wonderland was hand drawn with india ink on transparency. Letters were done in glow in the dark paint. Typographic octopus was done as a print on alternative substrate (wood.) I spent many 4am nights in the screen lab because I loved it so much.

We were given the text to Robin Kinross' Modern Typography essay and Josef Muller-Brockmann's Grid Systems and asked to type set it as well as design a book for each. This assignment was intended for us to learn how to use grids, how to set our type and basically familiarize ourselves with Indesign. I chose to do one book in very synthetic materials and the other in natural materials. It was very contrasting and related to each essay. I learned a lot about production and materials in this project.

Materials: Modern Typography: Vellum and Plastic, Grid Systems: Wood and Cardstock

The assignment was to create an identity system based on a Typographer and his type design. I was assigned Paul Renner and Futura. His mark is based off of the original Futura sketches. I used a circular system because Futura is very geometric and round. (So beautiful.) I designed his stationary in Futura Condensed just because I fell in love with how sleek it looked on paper. The selection of orange was because orange is a strong color, but not quite as dramatic as red nor bright as yellow.

Materials: Epson Matte 80lb, 20lb

		<description>&#60;img src= "http://annienguyen.net/header/header_convo.jpg"&#62;
This was the final project in ART337, Metal Fabrication. We were asked to imagine a conversation with an artist dead or alive. I chose Marcel Duchamp. At this point in my life, I had just come back from London on a semester abroad. While I was there, I saw Marcel Duchamp's work at the Tate Modern and just fell in love with his Rotoreliefs.

The two discs on the pendulums are supposed to reference Duchamp's Rotoreliefs. The images on the disc are a vectored map I did of the London Underground, tweaked to look De Stijl. (The map ended up looking Mondrian after so many times of commuting on the tube!) The sculpture explains my experience in London. I absolutely hated it when I was there. I was depressed, cold, and homesick. The lesson I learned was patience. The two pendulums swing back and forth and eventually line up, work out - much like how over time, I learned to enjoy London.
